Nic’s issues take precedence; the shark’s presence appears to exist merely to carry the story along and stimulate Nic’s healing. When Traucki concentrates on the shark, the director creates long-lasting tension. A situation in a kayak with an adrift paddle only minutes after witnessing the ocean monster lurking below induces white-knuckle breathlessness. The decision to use genuine shark video rather than CG generated predators is advantageous.
If only the actors could match the suspense. Traucki is unable to elicit a feeling of urgency from the core four; the only time any of the cast members come close to portraying the shark as a serious threat is with two island toddlers and their mother. Even when death or injury happens, the core quartet does not appear rushed. It doesn’t hurt that the opening scene in the kayaks creates the impression that the beach isn’t too far away, keeping deliverance in sight and reachable.
